Exceptionally spacious units with large windows and big patios or balconies ensure guests enjoy the spectacular setting. Full kitchens even include breakfast bars with stools. Enclosed by a lava-rock wall and pretty garden, a good-sized pool and hot tub provide relaxation and sunning on the spacious deck. For exercise, there's a tennis court. A grill area permits outdoor barbecuing.

Driving directions from Lihue Airport: Drive west on Hwy. 50, then south on Hwy. 520 to Koloa. Turn right, then left onto Poipu Rd. Proceed 2.5 miles, then turn right to Poipu Beach. Turn left onto Hoone Rd. and drive about half a mile to Pe'e Rd. Makahuena at Poipu is on the right.

What to expect: The luxuries of space, light, and fresh air—both inside and outside the units—reward guests at Makahuena. Amenity highlights: No sunrise, sunset, or whale passes unnoticed from this tip of Poipu Point overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean. At the edge of the bluff behind low, neat hedges, wooden benches provide front-row seating for the oceanic spectacle unfolding below—a blue-and-white musical of bass booms, rolling surf, and dancing spray. Insider tip: Due to the rocky coast, there is no access to the beach. However, a mile west is famed Poipu Beach, considered one of America's best beaches. S-shaped, the beach's lower loop is protected by a man-made reef, so water is calm. The upper loop offers surfing/boogie boarding. In between, there's great snorkeling among lava rocks around a small sand islet. To the east is Shipwreck Beach for surfing and beach walking.

The 79 condominium units are housed in two- and three-story, plantation-style wood buildings. The pool, sundeck, hot tub, barbecue area, and tennis court are seldom crowded. Access to upper floors is by outside stairs, not elevators. The front desk arranges golf outings, helicopter sightseeing trips, luaus, and all other activities available on Kauai.
